How our heating fuel differs from other oil products.

No one likes to feel like you’re making an uninformed purchase. That’s why we spend time researching the best car, dishwasher or vinyl siding before coming to a decision. When a particular vendor starts using jargon or talking over our heads, it’s easy to worry about getting taken for a ride.

In this article, we want to clear up some confusion on this topic.

The Difference Between Heating Oil and Fuel Oil

Heating oil is fuel oil — but not all fuel oil is heating oil.

Did that sound like the start of a question on the SAT? Well, please allow us to clarify.

Fuel oil refers to petroleum products that can be used to power a home heating system or an engine. It typically consists of heavier fuels created from crude oil, such as those heavier than gasoline. Heating oil, the fuel that you use in your home’s furnace or boiler, is one of these products.

Products That Qualify as Fuel Oil

Let’s look at a few of the products that qualify as fuel oil:

• Heating oil, also known as no. 2 fuel oil, is like off-road diesel but is used exclusively in home heating equipment. The heating oil Frank Lamparelli delivers, called Bioheat® fuel, is exceptionally eco-friendly. (More on that later.)
• Diesel is a fuel used in both on-road vehicles and off-road equipment like farm machinery and generators. Off-road diesel is chemically identical to on-road diesel but taxed differently (and dyed red).
• Kerosene has many uses, but from a residential perspective, it’s typically used for heating and cooking. Kerosene works well in freezing temperatures and is ideal for mobile homes and residences with outdoor tanks.

What is Bioheat fuel?

Bioheat fuel is a blend of ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and biofuel made from organic and recycled ingredients, including soybean oil, used cooking oil, inedible corn oil, animal fats and even algae!

Our blend includes 20% biofuel, which reduces its greenhouse gas emissions to a lower level than natural gas. Bioheat fuel also significantly reduces emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide, mercury and particulate matter.

You lose none of heating oil’s robust heating capacity with the addition of biofuel, and no modifications are needed to your equipment. In fact, your equipment will run cleaner, with less wear and tear and fewer repairs required!
