The first thing you need to know is what propane smells like. On its own, propane doesn’t smell like anything. That is why an odorant is added during processing. The most common description of the odorant’s smell is that it’s like rotten eggs.

Steps To Take When Smelling A Gas Leak

If you smell that rotten-egg odor, we have below directions you need to follow. These propane safety tips are essential to protecting lives and property and must be taken as soon as you smell gas.

• Put out any sources of ignition like candles or cigarettes.
• Get everyone out of the house IMMEDIATELY.
• Don’t use any light switches, thermostats, telephones, or appliances until you are safely out of the house and away from the area where you smell gas.
• If you can access it and it’s safe to do so, close the gas shutoff valve on the propane tank or cylinder.
• As soon as you are safely away, use your cell phone or a neighbor’s phone to call 911 and Frank Lamparelli.
• Give emergency personnel and the qualified propane service technicians time to check for escaped propane gas and do any repairs.
• Do not go back to the area where the leak was, or try to turn on the propane supply valve, even if you no longer smell gas.
• Have a trained propane service technician repair the leak, carefully inspect the propane tank and all gas appliances, and relight all pilots.
• Don’t return until you have permission from emergency personnel or the service technician.

You can have a propane leak even you don’t smell gas.

There may be rust, water, or excessive air in your propane tank. If you have an underground propane tank, it may be leaking. Propane’s odorant dissipates in the soil. The odorant may stick to the inside of the propane distribution pipes.
