Without a doubt, the start of this year has brought some of the most sustained freezing weather we’ve seen in a long time. This has left oil-fired furnaces and boilers running constantly for some weeks and consuming a lot of fuel in the process.

Now that we’ve reached the beginning of spring, your heating oil consumption should be considerably lower. Still, you need to have ample heating oil in your home’s tank to be ready for an unexpected cold spell on the South Shore ¬¬— and to protect the long-term health of your heating equipment.
To determine your current heating oil level, you can check your tank gauge. Heating oil tanks have a simple-to-read gauge. Look for the clear vial on top of the tank with a float or marker that moves between labels (F, ¾, ½, ¼), like a car’s gas gauge. The closer the float is to “F,” the fuller your tank. If the float is at ¼, it’s time to call for a delivery. If it’s at the bottom and not visible, your tank is likely empty.
First, the good news — running out of heating oil will likely not cause significant, long-lasting damage to your HVAC equipment.
That said, you don’t want to run out of fuel on a cold night. You’ll be left without heat while our team makes an emergency fuel delivery. Also, you can cause some maintenance issues for your system. When heating oil tanks run empty, sediment or sludge from the bottom can enter your system, potentially leading to blockages and diminished efficiency.
