Pets & Your HVAC System

air filterPets can bring great joy to your life – whether it’s a wagging tail after a long day, or a partner to snuggle up on the couch with as you binge your favorite TV show.

But, for as much as we love them, it’s only fact that they inadvertently bring dander, fur and dirt and with – three things that can wreak havoc on your home’s HVAC system, increase irritation for people with allergies, and reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system.

If you want to prevent the problems that pets can bring, here are five ways you can do it.

Groom Your Pets Regularly

Regular care of your pets’ coats is the best way to protect your HVAC system by keeping excessive hair from clogging filters and vents. Brush your pet once or twice a week to remove loose hair and dander and reduce shedding. Check with your vet to see how often to have your dog professionally groomed.

Change Your HVAC Filter Often

One of the most important things you can do for your home heating and cooling systems – whether or not you have pets – is to change the HVAC air filter regularly. If you have pets, or if someone in your home has asthma or another chronic respiratory condition, be sure to check your filters a minimum of once per month, and consider using HEPA filters.

Keep Your Home Clean

The best way to keep pet dander and fur from clogging your HVAC air filter (and eventually getting into your ductwork – see below) is to clean your home regularly. Vacuum carpeting at least twice a week with a HEPA-filtered vacuum. If you have a doggie door, make sure it is properly sealed to keep dust, dirt and pollen outside. Wash bedding regularly and vacuum upholstered furniture every time you vacuum the floor, too.

Clean Your Vent Covers and Ductwork

When dust and pet dander gets in your HVAC ductwork, it gets recirculated back into your home every time your home heating or A/C system’s blower is on. Don’t forget to clean your vent gratings and consider having your ductwork professionally cleaned on a schedule recommended by a duct cleaning company.
