Will a ductless cooling system save you money?
You have probably have heard that ductless cooling systems are incredibly efficient – more efficient, in some cases, than even central air conditioners (and certainly more efficient than window units).
But is there any truth to this – and if there is, why does a ductless system use less energy than other home A/Cs? Let’s take a look!
Ductless Cooling Efficiency
In general – assuming professional A/C installation and size-matching for both systems – ductless air conditioners do provide better energy efficiency than a conventional ducted cooling system. There are three main reasons for this:
- Standard central air conditioning ducts can leak – a lot. In fact, 20 percent or more of the air you paid to cool may never reach your living space. Because ductless cooling systems are…well, ductless…they typically run much higher efficiency.
- Air handlers in a ductless system use less power than the single large air handler in an AC hooked up to ducts – which means you’ll spend less money on energy to run them.
- With a ductless system, it’s easy to set up efficient cooling zones, since air handlers can be sized to fit each room and controlled with separate thermostats. With this set-up, you can “spend” your conditioned air in rooms that need it, and avoid cooling rooms that don’t.
Great for supplemental cooling, too
Of course, ductless cooling systems aren’t ideal for every home: if you already have ductwork installed, you’re probably best off sticking with a high-efficiency central air unit. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of some of the unique benefits of a ductless system as a supplemental cooling solution in problem rooms, home additions, shops, and more.
A ductless cooling system is a great way to save money compared to a traditional central air unit system, but only if it’s the right fit for your home and family – so if you’re not sure what the best way to cool your home might be…
